Es hija de Michael Lohan y Donata Dina Sullivan. Lohan tiene tres hermanos todos más jóvenes que ella: su hermano Michael, su hermana Aliana, que es una aspirante a modelo y a actriz, y su hermano Dakota. Descendiente de irlandeses e italianos imigrantes, su familia emigró a Estados Unidos con el fin de obtener una mejor condición económica. Lindsay se inició en el mundo del espectáculo muy joven.
