Nirvana se formó en Seattle, cuando Kurt Cobain y Krist Novoselic se unieron a Dale Crover para tocar en pequeños locales de la ciudad en 1985 y 1986. Adoptaron varios nombres para el grupo, pero ninguno terminó de gustarles hasta que, finalmente, tomaron el de Nirvana. Ellos fueron el estandarte de lo que vino a denominarse como música 'grunge'
