Fue formado en 1984 por el cantante Mick "Red" Hucknall (nacido Michael James Hucknall el 8 de junio de 1960 en Manchester), quien contó para ello con tres ex miembros del grupo Durutti Column: Tony Bowers (n. 31 de octubre de 1952) al bajo, Chris Joyce (n. en Manchester el 11 de octubre de 1957) a la batería y Tim Kellett (n. en Knaresborough el 23 de julio de 1964) al teclado; además de con Sylvan Richardson (guitarra) y Fritz McIntyre (n. en Birmingham el 2 de septiembre de 1956) al teclado.
