Formada en 1990 en Los Angeles, California, cuando Danny Carey (batería) se unió a su vecino Maynard James Keenan (voz), Adam Jones (guitarra) y Paul D'Amour (bajo) para ensayar. Desde ese momento Tool ha sido conocida como una banda algo oscura, con un sonido apreciado por su complejidad. Además, Tool se caracteriza por sus canciones largas, generalmente de más de seis minutos, temas cortos y completamente instrumentales
