Es hija de Michael Lohan y Donata Dina Sullivan. Lohan tiene tres hermanos todos más jóvenes que ella: su hermano Michael, su hermana Aliana, que es una aspirante a modelo y a actriz, y su hermano Dakota. Descendiente de irlandeses e italianos imigrantes, su familia emigró a Estados Unidos con el fin de obtener una mejor condición económica. Lindsay se inició en el mundo del espectáculo muy joven. Fue contratada para actuar en anuncios publicitarios, incluyendo algunos de Wendy´s, Pizza Hut, Padres Felices y Jell-O, en este último colaboró con Bill Cosby.
