ncubus se incio con el vocalista Brandon Boyd y el baterista José Pasillas ya que fueron compañeros de escuela. En 1990, cuando se encontraban en 8vo. grado en la escuela A.E. Wright, José conoció al guitarrista Mike Einziger. Años más tarde, en Calabasas High, la dupla hizo amistad con el bajista Alex Katunich, quien fue explusado de una banda de jazz por no saber leer las partituras. El trí­o decidió juntarse para tocar sólo por diversión. Al comienzo tocaban covers de Metallica y Megadeth, en los cuales José tení­a poco interés. Estos covers les ayudaron a ganar una pequeña reputación y convertirse en la atracción musical local. Tiempo después mientras Brandon y José asistí­an al Moorpark Community College, Mike decidió probar suerte en la banda de una artista desconocida en ese entonces, Alanis Morissette. Esta pequeña separación pareció caerles muy bien, pues la banda regresó con fuerza para continuar con sus presentaciones. Después, lanzaron su primer demo llamado “Closet Cultivation“.
